Susu Cave in Rinjani Mountain National Park, Lombok Island - Indonesia

Rinjani Mountain National Park has been included in the prime list of natural attractions in Lombok Island. That means travelers should never miss the opportunity to visit it whenever they come to Lombok. Not only it offers a delightful trekking route, but it also owns several unique caves especially the one called Susu Cave. The cave is famous for its distinct landscape and beauty for sure. However, another interesting fact is that the cave features a natural sauna or hot spring. No wonder, visitors can enjoy both exploration and relaxation in the cave.

The Nuance
It is true the hot spring becomes the prime attraction of Susu Cave. Still, people have other reasons to visit the cave, including witnessing and exploring its landscape. The location is near to Payung Cave (in the south part of it) and it is not quite big in terms of size. The mouth of the cave has the height of 60 cm and it has the width of about 2 meters. Inside, tourists may find a pond with a hot spring, having the temperature of about 24 Celsius degree. Not to mention both stalagmite and stalactite are available there.

Exploring Susu Cave
Susu means “Milk”, actually. Still, the cave is not related to such sweet healthy drink. So, why the locals named it that way? The reason is that the interior of the cave has a similar color to milk, which is white and creamy. That means it is only about the appearance instead of the history. With such unique color and majestic interior, visitors would take their time to do photography during the visit. They also take advantage of the cave to perform caving or exploration wholeheartedly despite the dark nuance inside.

What are the other activities? The next popular thing to do in Susu Cave is to enjoy the natural sauna or hot spring. The rumor has it. The water is able to eradicate tiredness and heal skin diseases right away. Not to mention the locals believe it is able to rejuvenate their stamina at once. Here is the further explanation why the cave is named “Susu”. The water of the hot spring looks like milk and the stalactite of the cave appear like a breast nipple. No wonder, the locals gave such name to the cave.

On a specific part of the cave (the roof), a small hole resides. According to the locals, such space often becomes a location where people conduct meditation. It is believed the cave gives good luck and provides positive energy to meditators. Another important fact is that the cave was formed due to the flow of lava in the past.
